As my plant biology teacher explained to our class, it's in a teacher's business to fail a certain number of students. It's an adaptive measure that bolsters their job security, thus increasing their overall chances of not only survival, but success. If your math teacher adhires to my biology teacher's ideas of adaptation, he was probably pleased to see that he was doing his job, and thus had adapted to his role as a teacher successfully.
Of course my biology teacher, the one who told us all this, was senile. Great teacher, but senile.
